University Of Cape Town Introduces Blockchain Course

The University of Cape Town (UCT), a South African university, has announced that it will begin classes in digital currency and blockchain starting in November. The institution says that students who enroll in the $693 course and complete it within six weeks will receive a legal certificate.

Understanding Blockchain Technology

According to UCT’s website students who successfully complete the course will have “an understanding of blockchain technology and how it fits into existing financial systems.” Additionally, they will understand “how applications like bitcoin, ethereum and other crypto-assets may be used.”

Students enrolled in this course will be expected to “investigate ethical implications of investing crypto-assets industry.” They will also learn how governance and ethics can shape financial infrastructure for society’s benefit.

Why a Blockchain Course?

In the course’s overview, the UCT explains why the university has now added blockchain and crypto education to its list of short courses. The overview states:

It’s no longer enough to simply know about cryptocurrencies. With crypto-assets and blockchain technologies growing at unprecedented rates, professionals need the ability to analyse and understand how the latest developments in the finance industry will fundamentally change the way the financial system functions in the present and near-future.

UCT is the first institution in Africa to offer crypto and blockchain lessons. He also stated that only those “organisations adapting their offerings to compete with cryptocurrency or offer support services to the industry” are best placed to profit from the rise in crypto assets.
